2006 FIFA World Cup Statistics

On Sunday, 9 July, Italy won the 2006 World Cup by beating France 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out. For Italy this is their fourth World Cup title, following victories in 1934, 1938 and 1982. Brazil are the only country to have won five World Cups.

This was only the second World Cup final to be decided by a penalty shoot-out. The first final to be decided on penalties was in 1994 when Brazil beat Italy 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw.
